Background of the Study
As educational institutions continue to rely on digital platforms for teaching, research, and administrative tasks, ensuring network availability becomes crucial for the effective operation of campus activities. Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State, is no exception. With increasing dependence on network resources, the university must ensure that its network infrastructure is resilient to failures and can provide uninterrupted services. High-availability (HA) network design plays a pivotal role in minimizing downtime, ensuring that users have constant access to critical applications, and mitigating the risks associated with system failures (Olafare et al., 2023).
In an HA network design, multiple redundant systems, failover mechanisms, and load balancing are implemented to maintain continuous network service. By strategically placing backup power sources, routers, and servers, universities can reduce the risks associated with equipment failure and network disruptions. Federal University, Lafia’s current network infrastructure requires an overhaul to improve redundancy and fault tolerance. This study will investigate the design and implementation of a high-availability network infrastructure tailored to the needs of the university.
The goal of this research is to develop a scalable and fault-tolerant network that ensures consistent availability, even during network congestion, hardware failure, or maintenance periods. An effective HA design will provide the necessary support for the university's growing demand for network resources while minimizing downtime.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lafia, experiences occasional network disruptions and downtime, which affect academic, administrative, and communication services. The lack of a comprehensive high-availability network infrastructure limits the university's ability to provide reliable and uninterrupted services for students, staff, and faculty.
Objectives of the Study
To design a high-availability network infrastructure for Federal University, Lafia.
To assess the impact of high-availability design on network performance and reliability.
To recommend best practices for implementing a fault-tolerant network infrastructure at the university.
Research Questions
What are the current network availability issues faced by Federal University, Lafia?
How can high-availability network design improve the reliability and performance of the university’s network?
What best practices should be followed in implementing a high-availability network infrastructure at Federal University, Lafia?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on designing a high-availability network for Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State, considering factors such as redundancy, failover mechanisms, and load balancing. The limitations of this study include the inability to implement the proposed design in the real-world environment and the potential for evolving network requirements that may change the scope of the design.
Definitions of Terms
High-Availability Network: A network design that ensures continuous operation by minimizing downtime through redundancy and failover systems.
Redundancy: The use of backup systems, such as secondary power supplies and network links, to prevent failure.
Failover: The process of switching to a backup system when a primary system fails.
Load Balancing: Distributing network traffic across multiple servers to avoid overloading any single system.
